The most basic and important need of any business is proper billing. You cannot imagine any successful online service provider without a billing system. Some of them have custom designed scripts to suit their own needs while many use standard billing applications available via leased or owned licenses. We will review some of these standard scripts in this article which will help users to choose the best billing system suitable for their business. I have outlined some major aspects of these billing applications based on which we will review them. These aspects are: 1. User Interface. There are many billing systems available today. I would end up writing too much if we consider each of the available applications. So we will be reviewing only three randomly selected billing applications in this article. Let us start with the most widely used billing application today.
Modernbill WHM Autopilot WHM Autopilot( whmautopilot.com ) is a product from Open Management Group LLC. WHM/Cpanel is one of the leading control panels today and so WHM Autopilot is specially designed to work with this control panel. Please note we are not considering WHM Autoilot version 3 in this article. Let us review it in brief as below: 1. User Interface WHM Autopilot has a fairly simple user interface. It is not too graphics intensive due to the limited number of features it has. It is easy to use with not much extra navigation and works well even for resellers. The order form is customizable to give it a better look along with your site. 2. System or Control Panel Compatibility As the name states, WHM Autopilot only works with WHM/Cpanel. Cpanel works on Linux only. So OS and control panel support is very limited. 3. Payment Gateways support WHM Autopilot supports up to 9 Payment Gateways currently. Some of them which are supported include Authorize.net, Paypal, 2checkout, Worldpay etc. 4. Automation WHM Autopilot supports automated creation and termination of account. Suspension and unsuspension of accounts is also automated. Server rotation, IP assignment, WHM account import are also some additional automation features. 5. Maintenance and Upgradeability WHM Autopilot is also PHP-Mysql based so it does not require any special maintenance. It is also capable of automatically creating a backup for itself if needed. WHM Autopilot lacks direct and smooth upgradeability. Most things need to be done manually if you want to upgrade your version of WHM Autopilot. 6. Extra features Integrated helpdesk, affiliate management, news flash module etc are some of the extra features WHM Autopilot provides. AgileBill AgileBill( agilebill.com ) is a product from Agileco. I have selected this application especially due to its scope of use and the features it has got. I don’t think it is much popular yet but definitely has the potential to make it big in the ever growing online market. Let us review it as below. 1. User Interface The user interface is similar to modernbill although not as refined as modernbill. The admin interface has an expanding menu with quick and well planned navigation. You do not realize the amount of options you are actually controlling due to the design used even though things look very simple to your eyes. 2. System or Control Panel Compatibility It currently supports Linux only I guess based on its requirements. The script supports amazing amount of control panels. Cpanel, Helm, Ensim, Directadmin, easyAdmin, Webmin etc are all supported. These features definitely make it an application worth having a look at. The compatibility features surely beat even modernbill at first look. 3. Payment Gateways support It would be hard to believe but this application supports 25+ payment gateways. Authorize.net, Ibill, Linkpoint, Blueway and many others are all in the listed of supported gateways with batch processing ability. 4. Automation Agilebill includes full billing automation with tasks like invoice creation and auto charge on supported gateways. Account operations like creation, suspension, termination are automated. It even cleans up databases, temporary files and fine tunes itself for optional performance. 5. Maintenance and Upgradeability The script is well capable of maintaining itself with features like db cleanup and backup features. It is PHP-MySQL like the others and easy to maintain. Upgrades are easy via its web interface for the modules. Just select/check and update. You won’t even loose your customizations as well. It surely makes it look easy from its web interface. I did not get much info of full upgrades of Agilebill but I still think there is a wizard for it too. 6. Extra features I can write almost another article on the extra features Agilebill provides. I’ll try to be short to include it in this article. Agilebill can take care of the following billable services: * Digital goods & content billing * Hosting & domain billing * Forum & CMS access billing * ISP/WISP billing * VoIP billing * General online billing * General online account management You should have got an idea of the extra features it is going to have to support all that by now. I won’t go that deep in this article about those features. In addition to those standard features include themes support, affiliate management, newsletter management, IP blocks, FAQs , ability to add static pages etc. Conclusion The basic function of any billing application is to manage accurate and faultless billing. Most of these applications do that perfectly. Personal opinions about these applications might change based on previous experiences with it. But for new users looking to have a billing system for themselves, I hope this article gives you insight on some of the best applications around.
